FLORESTAS EM FOCO

This document is the first chapter of 'Florestas em Foco', a publication by the Forest Declaration Assessment. It outlines the goals of the New York Declaration on Forests (NYDf), discusses the drivers of global deforestation, and calls for a new economic model that prioritizes nature and the inclusion of indigenous peoples to achieve sustainable forest management.

• The New York Declaration on Forests (NYDf) was established in 2014 by governments, companies, indigenous groups, and civil society to stop deforestation and restore degraded forests and landscapes. It currently has over 200 endorsers, but the specific goal of reducing deforestation by half by 2020 was not met.
• Global forest loss is estimated at 10 million hectares per year, an area equivalent to Iceland. This loss is driven by short-term economic growth and global demand for commodities, with seven specific agricultural commodities—cattle, palm oil, soy, cocoa, rubber, coffee, and wood fiber—causing more than half of the loss of tree cover.
• Financial and governmental systems often contradict conservation goals. Nearly two-thirds of the 150 primary financial institutions that channel trillions of dollars to high-forest-risk companies lack deforestation policies. Additionally, nearly 20% of intact tropical forest landscapes overlap with concessions for oil, gas, and mining.
• Despite challenges, there are signs of progress, including the recognition of forests as climate solutions in updated Paris Agreement promises and demand-side measures to reduce illegal deforestation in consumer markets such as the EU, USA, UK, and China.
