ENFOCANDO EN BOSQUES CAPITULO 1: LA DeclaraCion

This document is the first chapter of a report by the Forest Declaration Assessment, a civil society initiative. It evaluates progress toward the New York Declaration on Forests (NYDf), highlighting the gap between global commitments to forest conservation and the ongoing reality of deforestation driven by economic growth and commodity demand.

• The New York Declaration on Forests (NYDf), established in 2014 by governments, companies, indigenous peoples' groups, and civil society, consists of ten interrelated objectives aimed at stopping forest loss and restoring degraded forest lands. It currently has over 200 signatories.
• Global forest loss continues at a rate of 10 million hectares per year, which is comparable in size to Iceland. Consequently, the NYDf goal of reducing deforestation by half by 2020 was not met.
• Deforestation is largely driven by short-term economic growth and global demand for raw materials. Specifically, seven agricultural products—cattle, palm oil, soy, cocoa, rubber, coffee, and wood fiber—contribute to the loss of more than half of the forest cover. Additionally, approximately 20% of intact tropical forest areas are located within mining, oil, and gas concessions.
• There is a significant disconnect between conservation rhetoric and financial action. Nearly two-thirds of the 150 most important financial institutions allocate trillions of dollars to companies with high forest risk but lack deforestation policies. Conversely, governments have committed to investing approximately 2.4 trillion dollars annually in forest conservation and protection.
• Despite challenges, there are signs of progress: many countries have recognized forests as a climate solution in their updated Paris Agreement commitments, and consumer markets in the European Union, United States, United Kingdom, and China are adopting measures to reduce or eliminate illegal deforestation in imported raw materials.
