30e anniversaire du désastre industriel de Union Carbide à Bhopal

The document commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Union Carbide industrial disaster in Bhopal, India, highlighting the long-term human and environmental toll and criticizing Dow Chemicals for avoiding accountability. It calls for a legally binding UN system to judge corporations for ecocide and human rights violations, framing the struggle of Bhopal survivors as a catalyst for the global environmental justice movement.

• The 1984 Union Carbide industrial disaster in Bhopal released tons of toxic gas from a pesticide plant, affecting over 500,000 workers and residents, resulting in more than 25,000 related deaths and 150,000 people suffering severe long-term disabilities due to environmental contamination.
• Dow Chemicals, which acquired the responsible North American company Union Carbide, is accused of projecting a 'green' and responsible image through 'green plastics' and carbon neutrality claims while toxic residues continue to affect local residents and justice remains unserved.
• There is a call for the United Nations to establish a legally binding system to prosecute corporations for human rights violations and ecocide, noting that the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal had already found 100 companies guilty following a 1992 session on industrial hazards in Bhopal.
