Amazon wildfires are a wake-up call for the world

A statement by Friends of the Earth International condemning the 2019 Amazon wildfires, attributing them to the neoliberal policies of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and the expansion of corporate agribusiness, mining, and timber industries.

• The 2019 wildfires in the Amazon are not caused by weather anomalies, as temperatures and drought levels remained within annual averages, but are instead linked to the neoliberal policies of President Jair Bolsonaro's government.
• Brazil's National Institute for Aerospace Research (INPE) reported a 83% increase in fires in 2019 compared to the previous year, with over 74,000 fires detected between January and August 2019, the highest number since records began in 2013.
• The Bolsonaro administration has actively undermined environmental protections by cutting the global warming policy budget by 95% upon taking office in January 2019, dismantling climate laws, and weakening oversight bodies to benefit agribusiness and mining.
• Deforestation in July 2019 rose by 278% compared to July 2018, with more than 60% of the 2019 fires occurring on private properties used by global agribusiness.
• The destruction of the Amazon threatens the ancestral territories of approximately 900,000 Indigenous Peoples, whose traditional conservation methods are more effective at preventing habitat loss than officially protected areas.
