En solidaridad con el Movimiento de los/as Afectados/as por Represas – MAB en Brasil

Friends of the Earth organizations express solidarity with the Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB) in Brazil following the murder of activist Nilce de Souza Magalhães (Nicinha), whose body was found in the Jirau hydroelectric dam lake. The statement highlights a pattern of violence in Rondonia, where 17 people were killed and 30 were targets of attempted murder in 2016 due to socio-environmental conflicts related to large infrastructure works.

• Nilce de Souza Magalhães, known as Nicinha, disappeared on January 7 of the current year in Porto Velho, Rondonia, and her body was discovered five months later at the bottom of the lake of the Jirau hydroelectric megadam, a project she had actively opposed to defend the rights of affected peoples.
• In 2016, the state of Rondonia recorded 17 murders and 30 attempted murders resulting from socio-environmental conflicts, which were primarily linked to large infrastructure projects.
