State repression and violence in Brazil escalate as Michel Temer’s administration deploys the army against civilians

A statement by Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) denouncing the deployment of the army by Michel Temer's administration to repress social mobilizations in Brazil, specifically in Brasilia, and reporting violence against peasants in Pará State.

• On May 24, the administration of Michel Temer deployed the army to repress social mobilizations and established a State of Emergency in Brasilia, which was scheduled to last until May 31st. Following public outrage and congressional pressure, the deployment of troops in Brasilia was revoked on May 25.
• Various social movements, including the Landless Workers Movement of Brazil (MST), La Vía Campesina, the Homeless Workers Movement, the World March of Women, trade unions, and indigenous and quilombola communities, are protesting against the government and its neoliberal measures intended to increase the exploitation of workers, territories, and communities.
• Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean reports a new massacre of peasants in Pará State, which was conducted to protect the interests of agribusiness and large landowners.
