• The industrial palm oil production model relies on several destructive practices to maintain low costs and high productivity: large-scale monocultures often replacing biodiversity-rich tropical forests, high-yield plants requiring excessive water and phytosanitary products, precarious labor conditions, and the violent seizure of local community lands.
• The RSPO's certification principles are viewed as structurally flawed because they do not address the industry's dependence on exclusive control of vast fertile lands or its growth paradigm. Specifically, the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) is described as false in practice, as projects often proceed after concessions are granted but before communities are contacted.
• Despite claims of supporting smallholders, the palm oil industry remains dominated by large corporations. In 2016, 99.6% of production was controlled by companies, and 88% of certified palm oil came from corporate plantations.
• The document calls for governments to take immediate action by implementing a moratorium on palm oil plantation expansion, reducing demand by stopping the use of food resources as fuel, respecting indigenous and local community land rights, and promoting agroecology over agro-industry.
