• To prevent a food price crisis similar to the 2008 financial crisis, measures to ensure the cross-border movement of basic food items must be paired with strict limits on financial speculation. The document suggests that G20 governments could restrict the trading of agricultural futures contracts to prevent speculative bubbles, similar to how they have banned short selling or conditioned corporate financial support on the cessation of dividends and share buybacks.
• The current food system is described as vulnerable to shocks due to long supply chains and dependence on external inputs, while contributing to soil depletion, water pollution, biodiversity loss, and the climate crisis. The document advocates for the development of local food systems, which are currently hindered by policies discouraging farmers from saving and exchanging seeds and the abandonment of national food reserves.
• The authors call for a coordinated global political response led by the United Nations Committee on World Food Security. They argue that the universal right to food is inseparable from the rights of food producers and should be supported by existing human rights instruments, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ILO conventions, and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas.
