A statement addressed to the G20 Extraordinary Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture on April 21, 2020, arguing that COVID-19 responses must protect human rights, curb financial speculation on food, and transition toward a sustainable, resilient food system based on food sovereignty.

It suggests that if G20 governments can prohibit naked short selling or condition corporate financial support on the cessation of dividends and share buybacks, they can similarly restrict the trade of agricultural futures to prevent speculative bubbles.
• The current food system is described as highly vulnerable due to its reliance on long supply chains and external inputs, contributing to soil depletion, water pollution, biodiversity loss, the climate crisis, and the incubation of future pandemics. The document advocates for the reconstruction of the system to support local food systems, which are currently hindered by policies discouraging farmers from saving and exchanging seeds and the dismantling of national food reserves.
• The authors call for a coherent global political response coordinated by the United Nations Committee on World Food Security. They argue that the universal right to food is inseparable from the rights of food producers and that existing human rights instruments—including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ILO Conventions, and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants—should serve as the basis for concrete measures to ensure the right to food.
