Uruguay muestra el camino al dejar las negociaciones del acuerdo secreto del TISA

A statement by Friends of the Earth International announcing and celebrating the decision of the Uruguayan government to withdraw from the Trade in Services Agreement (TISA) negotiations following a successful public mobilization campaign.

• The government of Uruguay decided to abandon the secret negotiations for the Trade in Services Agreement (TISA), a move described as a victory against trade agreements that favor transnational capital over public interest.
• The TISA is characterized as a radical agreement designed to force states to open markets to transnational companies, privatize public services, and reduce regulations, which may lead to job losses and decreased environmental, health, and education protections.
• The TISA negotiations involve 52 countries representing approximately two-thirds of the global economy, including the United States, the European Union, Turkey, Mexico, Australia, Pakistan, Taiwan, and Chile.
• The agreement targets several sectors for increased corporate exploitation, including finance, telecommunications, internet navigation, e-commerce, government procurement, transport, energy services, postal services, and "environmental services."
• Uruguay's withdrawal was the result of a mobilization campaign led by the PITCNT trade union, REDES-AT, and other social movements, which included a general strike and public pressure that convinced the Frente Amplio government that the agreement would undermine national development.
