In solidarity with the ‘Movement of those affected by hydroelectric dams’ in Brazil

A statement by Friends of the Earth International and its affiliates expressing solidarity with the Movement of those affected by hydroelectric dams (MAB) following the murder of activist Nilce de Souza Magalhães (Nicinha) in Brazil.

• Nilce de Souza Magalhães, known as Nicinha, a leader of the Movimiento de los/as Afectados/as por Represas (MAB), disappeared in Porto Velho, Rondonia, on January 7, 2016. Her body was discovered five months later at the bottom of the Jirau hydroelectric dam lake.
• Socio-environmental conflicts, primarily linked to large infrastructure mega-projects, led to 17 assassinations and 30 assassination attempts in Rondonia state during 2016.
