La solidarité internationaliste à travers le monde : le point sur nos luttes en 2020/2021

A statement by Friends of the Earth International detailing its international solidarity efforts between 2020 and 2021 to support environmental and human rights defenders facing authoritarianism and corporate exploitation.

• The rise of right-wing populism and authoritarian leaders, such as Bolsonaro in Brazil, Duterte in the Philippines, and Trump in the United States, has led to the dismantling of regulations and the strengthening of multinational corporate power at the expense of human rights and democracy.
• Violence against environmental and human rights defenders has increased significantly; in 2020, Global Witness recorded 227 deadly attacks related to natural resource exploitation, with indigenous populations accounting for more than one-third of these murders in Latin America.
• In Honduras, the Garifuna indigenous community faces systematic attacks from banana and oil palm companies, as well as land grabbers for tourism and housing. On July 18, 2020, four members of the organization OFRANEH were abducted by armed men in police uniforms and remain missing.
• In Colombia, nearly half the population (over 21 million people) lives in poverty following three decades of neoliberalism. The government has failed to respect the 2016 peace agreements with FARC and continues a strategy of systemic oppression against social movements.
• The Israeli occupation of Palestine causes severe human rights violations and environmental degradation, including land and water grabbing and forced displacements. In October 2021, the Israeli Ministry of Defense designated six Palestinian civil society organizations as "terrorist organizations."
• The "Mozambique LNG" gas project in Cabo Delgado, involving the French company Total, has displaced over 550 families and contributed to poverty and violence. Following a deadly attack in March 2021, Total invoked "force majeure" to suspend the project without providing compensation to the community.
• Friends of the Earth International is advocating for a binding United Nations treaty that would hold multinationals, their investors, and supply chains accountable before an international court for violations of human rights, environmental law, and labor standards.
