A statement by Friends of the Earth International condemning the 2019 Amazon wildfires, attributing them to the neoliberal policies of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and the expansion of agribusiness, mining, and logging.

• The 2019 wildfires in the Amazon are not accidental or caused by weather extremes, but are driven by the expansion of the agricultural frontier for corporate profit and the neoliberal policies of President Jair Bolsonaro's government.
• Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (INPE) recorded a record number of over 74,000 fires between January and August 2019, representing an 83% increase compared to the previous year, with 52.6% occurring in the Amazon.
• The Bolsonaro administration has actively dismantled environmental protections by cutting 95% of the climate policy budget, suppressing climate laws, and weakening oversight bodies, leading to a 278% increase in deforestation in July 2019 compared to July 2018.
• Over 60% of the 2019 fires occurred on private lands used by global agribusiness, facilitating illegal access to the territories of Indigenous and quilombola communities by loggers, soy and cattle producers, and illegal miners (garimpeiros).
• The Amazon rainforest, home to nearly 900,000 Indigenous people and over 3 million plant and animal species, is most effectively protected by Indigenous and local communities rather than official protected areas.
