#flirtingwithdisaster on Valentine’s Day

A fact sheet by Friends of the Earth detailing how climate change and extreme weather patterns threaten the production of common Valentine's Day gifts, including chocolate, coffee, wine, flowers, and other agricultural products.

• Climate change is projected to severely impact the production of cocoa and coffee. A 2 degree Celsius temperature increase could lead to a 40-70 percent loss in cocoa production in various regions, and global warming and droughts may eliminate 65-100 percent of land suitable for coffee cultivation in Africa.
• The production of flowers and wine is under threat from environmental changes. California may lose nearly 70 percent of arable land for wine grapes, and by 2050, regions like Bordeaux, France, may become unsuitable for production. In Kenya, rose production is threatened by floods, droughts, and a predicted temperature increase of 2-5° C, while forest cover in the Lake Naivasha region fell from 10 percent to 1.2 percent since 1960.
• Other commodities are affected by climate and environmental factors: cotton production could decrease by up to 80 percent; Indonesian sugar cane was reduced by 30 percent in 2011 due to dry soil and hot temperatures; and silk production in India is threatened by logging, pesticides, and climate change.
