In solidarity with Black Lives Matter

A statement from Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica expressing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement following a series of violent incidents in July 2016, and committing the organization to deeper internal reassessment regarding racial justice.

• Friends of the Earth expresses condolences and condemns the violence associated with the police shootings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, as well as the killing of five police officers—Sergeant Michael J. Smith and Officers Lorne B. Ahrens, Brent Thompson, Michael Krol, and Patrick Zamarripa—during a rally in Dallas.
• The organization asserts that the violence in Dallas should not be used to delegitimize the Black Lives Matter movement, which it describes as a response to the murder of Trayvon Martin and a voice against racial injustice and inequality in America.
• Friends of the Earth commits to reassessing its activism to better address broken economic, justice, and electoral systems that oppress people based on skin color, pledging to engage in more meaningful conversations on racial justice and to be better allies to movements fighting for social and environmental justice.
