This report by Ember examines the growth of solar energy in Brazil, China, and India over the decade following the Paris Agreement. It details how the transition of solar leadership from advanced economies to emerging markets was driven by national policies, international financial mechanisms, and industrial scaling, resulting in solar becoming the fastest-growing electricity source globally.

• Solar energy has experienced exponential growth globally, increasing its share of electricity generation from 1% in 2015 to 6.9% in 2024, and further to 8.8% in the first half of 2025. Global solar capacity reached 2.2 TW in 2025, hitting a milestone ten years earlier than 2016 predictions.
• Leadership in solar generation has shifted from wealthy nations to emerging economies. In 2015, OECD members represented nine of the top ten countries for solar capacity and 59% of new global capacity; by 2024, the OECD's share of new additions dropped to 26%, with two-thirds of new capacity now installed in emerging markets.
