Cooling-related electricity use in Türkiye is on the rise

Türkiye's electricity use for space cooling is growing significantly faster than overall electricity demand, reaching 10 TWh in 2024. During peak summer hours and extreme heat events, cooling accounts for a substantial share of total consumption, reflecting the increasing pressure of climate change on the country's energy system.

• Electricity use for space cooling in Türkiye reached 10 TWh in 2024, representing a 19% increase from the previous year and accounting for over 8% of total electricity consumption during the summer months of 2024.
• Between 2022 and 2024, the growth rate of electricity demand for cooling (12%) was more than four times higher than the average annual growth rate of total electricity demand (2.8%).
• Cooling demand creates significant peaks in electricity use; at 2:00 PM on July 28, 2025, cooling drove 18% of total demand, with over 10 GWh of the 59 GWh total consumption attributed to cooling.
• Extreme heat events significantly amplify cooling needs, as seen in June 2024, which was the hottest June on record with temperatures 3.6 °C above the long-term average, causing cooling-related electricity consumption to reach 2.4 TWh.
• The share of cooling in total summer electricity consumption in Türkiye increased from 7.3% in 2023 to 8.1% in 2024.
