This fact sheet identifies 20 potential sources for hydrogen production and categorizes them by the technical process used to extract or create the gas, ranging from steam methane reforming and gasification to electrolysis and photobiological water splitting.

• Hydrogen can be produced through several distinct chemical and physical processes depending on the feedstock: Steam Methane Reformation (SMR) uses natural gas, renewable natural gas, or municipal waste; Gasification utilizes coal, biomass, or municipal waste; and Electrolysis splits water using electricity from sources like solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, or nuclear.
• Additional production methods include biomass-derived liquid reforming for ethanol and methanol, microbial biomass conversion for sugar-rich feedstocks, and photobiological water splitting using bacteria or algae.
• Hydrogen can also be obtained from naturally occurring sources within the earth's crust (water and oceanic crust), through photoelectrochemical water splitting using semiconductors and sunlight, or via partial oxidation of oil to produce syngas.
