AGRICULTURAL MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE (AMA) Program Description

The Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) program is a USDA initiative designed to help agricultural producers manage financial risk through conservation practices, crop diversification, and marketing assistance. It is available in 16 specific US states where crop insurance rates are low, with permanent mandatory funding of $10 million per fiscal year.

• The AMA program supports agricultural producers in mitigating climate change and increasing resilience by covering up to 75 percent of the costs for conservation practices, including tillage management, cover crops, and agroforestry.
• The program is administered by three USDA entities: the Natural Resources Conservation Service handles conservation provisions, while the Risk Management Agency and the Agricultural Marketing Service manage marketing and production diversification.
• Financial assistance under the AMA program is limited to a maximum of $50,000 per person per year.
• The program is permanently authorized with mandatory funding of $10 million for each fiscal year, distributed as follows: at least 50 percent to the Natural Resources Conservation Service for conservation, watershed, and irrigation structures; at least 10 percent to the Agricultural Marketing Service for organic certification cost share; and 40 percent to the Risk Management Agency.
• Eligible producers can use AMA funds for a variety of risk-reduction activities, including the construction of irrigation or watershed management structures, planting windbreaks, organic farming, integrated pest management, soil erosion control, and entering into hedging, options, or futures contracts.
