- Despite higher initial purchase prices—typically $450,000 to $550,000 for a 40-foot hybrid versus $280,000 to $300,000 for a diesel bus—federal incentives can reduce the cost gap. The Clean Fuels Grant Program covers 90 percent of the incremental cost of alternative fuel buses, potentially reducing the agency's additional cost to $20,000.
- Hybrid buses reduce operational and maintenance costs. Maintenance expenses are lowered because the electric drive has fewer parts and regenerative braking can extend the life of brake linings by 50 to 100 percent. An NREL evaluation indicated that operational costs for hybrids are 15 percent lower than those for conventional diesel buses.
- Adoption of hybrid buses has increased across North America, with over 900 buses in service across more than 40 transit agencies as of 2006. Major deployments include New York City (325 buses), Seattle's King County (214 parallel hybrids), and Washington DC (100 buses ordered).
