Success to agree on climate goals paramount for sustainable development goals

Carbon Market Watch asserts that climate change and sustainable development are deeply interlinked and that the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must incorporate stronger wording and a standalone climate goal. The author warns that the current separation between the SDG process and the UNFCCC process creates confusion and risks undermining development efforts, as the UNFCCC climate treaty will not enter into force until after 2020.

• The document argues that sustainable development cannot succeed without an ambitious climate goal, as climate change affects all living conditions and development priorities determine a country's capacity to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
• There is a perceived lack of integration between the UNFCCC process and the development of the SDGs, which may lead some countries to question the necessity of including climate issues within the post-2015 development process.
• Because the UNFCCC climate treaty will only enter into force after 2020, the author contends that the SDGs must include a standalone goal on tackling climate change to ensure immediate action toward low carbon and climate resilient development.
