Homologación Vehicular

This guide from the Centro de Movilidad Sostenible outlines three methods for vehicle homologation to certify compliance with emissions, efficiency, and safety requirements, enabling the implementation of vehicle labeling, consumption standards, and incentives for cleaner vehicles.

• Vehicle homologation processes are used to certify that vehicles sold in a country meet established safety, efficiency, and emissions requirements, which in turn allows for the creation of vehicle labeling policies, consumption standards, and incentive programs for cleaner and more efficient vehicles.
• There are three distinct methods for vehicle homologation: self-certification (Autocertificación), authorized technical services (Servicios técnicos autorizados), and direct administration (Directa administración).
• The three homologation methods differ in their administrative control and flexibility: self-certification offers the most flexibility for the manufacturer but requires strong self-control and a robust sanctions regime for non-compliance; authorized technical services involve official laboratories following current protocols to issue reports for administrative approval; and direct administration provides the highest administrative control and the least flexibility for the manufacturer.
