Global Renewable Independent Power Supplier

The Global Renewable Independent Power Supplier (Grips) is a proposed renewable energy service company designed to mobilize private-sector funding for hybrid energy plants in remote areas of developing countries, specifically targeting industrial anchor clients currently dependent on diesel generators.

• Grips aims to replace expensive and carbon-intensive diesel generators for industrial anchor clients in remote areas of developing countries. The target market consists of industrial off-grid diesel systems with an estimated installed capacity of approximately 29 GW.
• The Grips financial model utilizes 100% equity capital to finance project implementation, which avoids conflicts between debt and equity providers and allows for revolving power purchase agreements (PPAs) with durations as short as five years.
• The initial phase of Grips requires approximately USD 5 million for corporate governance setup and pilot project identification. The construction of a first pilot location is estimated to cost between USD 20 million and USD 60 million, depending on technology mix, location, and size.
• Successful implementation of the Grips model is projected to avoid up to 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually through 2030, while improving industrial energy security and rural electrification in low-income countries.
