Preliminary Stocktake of G20 Strategies and Practices: A Contribution to the Brazilian G20 Presidency's Global Initiative on Bioeconomy

This report provides a preliminary stocktake of G20 members' strategies and practices regarding the bioeconomy to support the Brazilian G20 Presidency's Global Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB) in 2024. It identifies common thematic axes, suggests high-level principles for a sustainable bioeconomy, and proposes five key themes for a future program of work to foster international cooperation and learning.

• The global bioeconomy is experiencing significant growth, with the World Bioeconomy Forum estimating its current total value at approximately US$4 trillion and predicting it will reach US$30 trillion by 2050, representing one-third of global economic value. Specific national projections include China, which expects its bioeconomy to be valued at US$3.3 trillion by the end of 2025, and India, which has seen double-digit growth rates in recent years.
• While G20 members have diverse priorities and definitions of the bioeconomy, their approaches are generally aligned across three primary thematic axes: biotechnology (focused on research, development, and innovation), bioresources (focused on the sustainable use of biodiversity), and bio-ecology (focused on broader sustainable development).
• The report proposes that the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy establish a set of high-level principles to ensure the future global bioeconomy is regenerative of biodiversity, supports climate action, delivers equitable economic outcomes, and supports the transition of the real economy toward sustainable development.
• Five themes are identified as a potential foundation for a G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy program of work: the integration of the bioeconomy into economic and green growth plans; the impact on livelihoods and equity (especially for indigenous peoples, local communities, and small-scale farmers); the role of sustainable finance; the facilitation of 'biotrade'; and the development of measurement methodologies and indicators.
