Framework for Sustainable Finance Integrity

The Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) has introduced the Framework for Sustainable Finance Integrity to establish universal sustainability guardrails for the global financial system. The Framework aims to address the lack of a standardized system for tracking the integrity of net-zero commitments and coordinating action between public and private financial actors to meet the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals.

• The financial system currently lacks a universally accepted framework to define robust sustainability commitments or a centralized organization to track the overall progress and impact of these commitments across the system. Additionally, there is no international forum for regular knowledge exchange between public and private financial sectors to achieve systems-level results.
• The Framework for Sustainable Finance Integrity provides a set of 'sustainability guardrails' and 'Necessary Action metrics' derived from scientific analysis of climate science and net zero trajectories. These metrics are designed to align financial sector ambition with global climate and sustainability targets.
• The Framework categorizes necessary actions into three distinct areas: Targets and objectives (including alignment with the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals, and targets for pollution, adaptation, and just transition); Implementation (covering governance, risk management, and the phase out of fossil fuel finance); and Metrics and transparency (focusing on internal and external reporting, such as nature-related disclosures).
