Landscape of Climate Finance for Land Use in Brazil: International Cooperation and Development

This report analyzes international cooperation and development finance for land use in Brazil from 2015 to 2020, detailing the sources, instruments, and beneficiaries of these climate-aligned financial flows.

• Between 2015 and 2020, international cooperation and development sources provided an average of US$ 320 million per year in climate finance for land use in Brazil, which represented 5% of all climate-aligned financial flows. This funding came primarily from public sources, including international governments (US$ 136 million/year), climate funds (US$ 125 million/year), and multilateral development banks (US$ 58 million/year), with grants being the primary instrument at US$ 216 million/year.
• Major contributors to this finance included the German government (US$ 79 million/year), the Green Climate Fund (GCF) (US$ 33 million/year), the Global Environment Facility (GEF) (US$ 32 million/year), the Amazon Fund (US$ 20 million/year), and the government of Norway (US$ 20 million/year). While the Amazon Fund is the primary climate fund for land use in Brazil, its average annual approval of US$ 20 million accounted for approximately 0.7% of total tracked climate finance for land use in the country.
