Food Securities Fund

The Food Securities Fund, developed by Clarmondial, provides working capital loans to agricultural aggregators in emerging and developing markets to support the transition to sustainable agriculture, with an initial focus on Sub Saharan Africa.

• The Food Securities Fund provides working capital loans to agricultural aggregators, such as traders, processors, and cooperatives, in emerging and developing markets. Its goal is to offer affordable and timely credit to facilitate a transition to sustainable agriculture, specifically focusing on gender, rural livelihoods, sustainable land management, and climate mitigation.
• The fund utilizes a risk-blending structure to attract institutional investors, including banks, insurance companies, and pension funds from the US and Europe. Financial commitments include a USD 37.5 million credit guarantee from the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), subsidized by USAID’s Bureau for Resilience and Food Security (RFS), and USD 15 million from the Global Environment Facility via Conservation International.
• The fund began operations in March 2021 with an initial investment in East African coffee production, targeting nearly 4,000 smallholder farmers who utilize organic and regenerative practices and agroforestry systems.
