COP29 | UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE 2024 Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) Background

The Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) aims to increase worldwide climate resilience by strengthening adaptive capacity and reducing vulnerability. Following the agreement on targets and a framework at COP28, COP29 discussions are expected to focus on establishing measurable progress metrics, securing adaptation finance, and improving accountability for National Adaptation Plans.

• The Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) is designed to enhance global climate resilience by focusing on the protection of ecosystems, livelihoods, and lives, while reducing climate vulnerability and strengthening adaptive capacity.
• At COP28, parties established a framework and targets for the GGA to create a global standard for measuring and understanding effective adaptation.
• Priority areas for COP29 include the creation of measurable targets, the alignment of adaptation with mitigation goals, and addressing funding gaps for developing nations, specifically through a High-level Ministerial Dialogue on November 18, 2024.
