Seasonal Climate Outlook for Europe October

Europe's September 2025 was its 5th warmest on record, with significant temperature and precipitation variations across the continent. Forecasts for the December 2025 – February 2026 winter period project above-average temperatures, particularly in eastern and northeastern Europe, and weakly positive precipitation anomalies.

• September 2025 was the 5th warmest September on record for Europe, with temperatures 1.23°C above the 1991–2020 mean. Temperature anomalies were record-high in Scandinavia and significantly above normal in eastern Europe, though below normal in the UK, France, and parts of the Iberian peninsula and Turkey. Precipitation was record-dry for parts of Belarus and Russia, while parts of France, Germany, and the UK saw their wettest September on record.
• The seasonal forecast for December 2025 to February 2026 projects a warmer-than-average winter for Europe, with temperature anomalies ranging from 0.5°C in western Europe to 2°C in northeastern and eastern Europe. Total precipitation is expected to show weakly positive anomalies of up to +10%.
• Soil moisture projections for the upcoming winter indicate positive anomalies in parts of eastern Europe, specifically Russia, while weakly negative anomalies are expected in Turkey and parts of western and central Europe.
