Fastest-Warming Seasons in the UK

Analysis of U.K. Met Office data from 1970-2024 shows that spring is the fastest-warming season for the U.K. as a whole, all four constituent nations, and all six climate districts in England. While all seasons have warmed by at least 1°C across the four nations, spring temperatures for the U.K. overall increased by 1.8°C, with England experiencing the highest increase at 2°C. This warming contributes to ecological mismatches, such as flowers blooming up to a month earlier, and increases risks to agriculture and human health.

• Spring is the fastest-warming season for the U.K. overall and for each of its four nations: England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. Between 1970 and 2024, the average spring temperature for the U.K. increased by 1.8°C.
• Among the U.K. nations, England has experienced the most significant spring warming, with an average temperature increase of 2°C since 1970. Other nations saw increases of 1.8°C in Wales, 1.6°C in Northern Ireland, and 1.5°C in Scotland.

• Spring warming leads to ecological mismatch, where flowers bloom up to a month earlier, potentially disrupting pollination and migration. It also increases risks of crop loss due to late frosts following mild winters, extends the hayfever season, and can increase pests and weeds through longer growing seasons.
