The China Green Bond Market Mid Year Report 2017, prepared by the Climate Bonds Initiative and the China Central Depository & Clearing Company, analyzes the growth, composition, and regulatory environment of China's green bond market during the first half of 2017.

• The profile of green bond issuers diversified in the first half of 2017. Non-financial enterprises and policy banks each issued 38% and 24% of bonds respectively, while commercial banks' share dropped significantly to 38% from 87% in the same period of the previous year. The majority of these bonds (78%) had maturities between 3 and 5 years, specifically 42.3% for 3 years and 35.8% for 5 years.
• External review is widely adopted, with 83% of green bonds receiving second-party opinions to enhance investor confidence. Additionally, 78% of onshore green bonds meet both international and Chinese definitions. In June 2017, China Three Gorges Corporation issued a 650 million Euro green bond in the offshore market, the first by a Chinese issuer to be certified under the Climate Bonds Standard.
• The Chinese government implemented several policy updates to support green finance in 2017, including the CSRC's guidance on March 3 to encourage investment in green corporate bonds and the establishment of green finance reform and innovation pilot zones in Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guizhou, Jiangxi, and Xinjiang on June 14. Other initiatives include the 'Bond Connect' mechanism launched on July 3 to allow offshore investors into the mainland bond market and a joint initiative with the European Union to align green finance definitions.
