The Climate Bonds Initiative reports that the global green bond market in Q1 2015 saw 44 issuances totaling $7.2 billion. While the quarter started slowly, the market showed signs of maturation through diversification in currencies and credit ratings, alongside significant growth in emerging markets and US municipal bonds.

• In the first quarter of 2015, 44 green bonds were issued with a total value of $7.2 billion. Issuance grew throughout the quarter, with March seeing three times the volume of January. The total volume of green bonds in circulation by the end of Q1 2015 reached $60 billion.
• The market is diversifying in terms of currency and credit ratings. Q1 2015 featured bonds in 11 different currencies, including the Turkish Lira, Brazilian Real, and Indian Rupee, and ratings ranging from AAA to B-. Non-investment grade bonds appeared, such as Terraform Power Operating (BB-) and Paprec (B- and B+).
• India emerged as a focal point in emerging markets, issuing its first corporate green bond via Yes Bank, totaling 10.2 billion Indian Rupees ($160 million) for renewable energy. Yes Bank also issued a $500 million bond for projects in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This is supported by India's goal to install 165 GW of renewable energy by 2022, which is estimated to require $70 billion in debt investment.
• US municipal green bonds grew, particularly for clean water and green buildings in states including Washington, Massachusetts, Arizona, and Indiana. However, these issuers rarely seek second-party opinions from independent research agencies, leading to concerns about the 'green' nature of the assets and their climate resilience.
• Development banks remain market leaders, accounting for approximately 46.2% of total issuance in Q1 2015. The World Bank issued its largest green bond (approx. $600 million) and its longest-dated green bond (40 years).
