In Indonesia, studies found that 55 percent of amalgam smelters in Sulawesi and 62 percent in Kalimantan were diagnosed with chronic mercury intoxication.
- Mercury pollution threatens the right to food by contaminating fish and shellfish, which are primary protein sources for over 2.9 billion people. A US Geological Survey found mercury in all sampled predatory fish across 291 locations, with 27 percent exceeding the US EPA human health criterion of 0.3 micrograms of methylmercury per gram of wet weight.
- Lack of information and improper waste management lead to continued environmental release of mercury. In the Philippines, 88 percent of households dispose of mercury-containing lamps with domestic waste. Globally, the burning of mercury-added products in waste adds 200 tons of mercury to the atmosphere annually.
- Child labor in mining is a significant human rights violation, with up to 1 million children involved in mining globally. In Indonesia and Zimbabwe, children working in ASGM, some as young as 7, exhibited high levels of mercury in biomonitors and symptoms such as ataxia.
- The case of Thor Chemicals in South Africa illustrates the dangers of the global toxic trade. The firm used unskilled Zulu-speaking labor to manage imported mercury waste in Kwazulu-Natal, resulting in river pollution, worker deaths, and permanent disabilities, including one worker who could no longer talk or walk.
