The Biden Administration Must Denounce Violent and Repression in Peru

The Center for International Environmental Law and other organizations urge the Biden administration to publicly condemn the killing of at least 48 civilians and the use of excessive force by security forces in Peru under President Dina Boluarte.

• Since the Dina Boluarte government took power, at least 48 civilians have been killed during social protests, with 41 of those deaths resulting from gunfire. Human rights groups attribute most of these deaths to Peruvian security forces using lethal force indiscriminately.
• A coalition of international human rights and environmental organizations, including the Center for International Environmental Law, Amazon Watch, and others, is calling on the U.S. government to unambiguously reject the arbitrary detentions and disproportionate use of force in Peru, as well as the use of stigmatizing language against protestors.
• The Biden administration has provided public support for President Dina Boluarte's government but has not made public statements regarding specific concerns over human rights violations, contrasting with the public concerns expressed by the EU, Canada, the UK, the IACHR, and the UN OHCHR.
