This document is a variation of an Atmospheric Emission Licence (AEL) issued on 31 March 2015 by the Nkangala District Municipality to Eskom Holdings SOC Limited for the Komati Power Station. • Komati Power Station has a total nominal capacity of 940 MW and utilizes coal and fuel oil as primary inputs, with maximum permitted consumption rates of 460,000 tons per month for coal and 5,000 tons per month for fuel oil.
• The licence establishes a schedule for reducing maximum emission rates for pollutants from the boiler flues between 1 April 2015 and 1 April 2020. For PM, the limit drops from 100 mg/Nm³ to 50 mg/Nm³; for SO2, from 3,500 mg/Nm³ to 2,600 mg/Nm³; and for NOx, from 1,300 mg/Nm³ to 750 mg/Nm³.
• Eskom is required to install continuous emission monitoring equipment for PM, SO2, and NOx on all units by 01 June 2015 and must submit an Emission Offset Programme to reduce PM pollution in the ambient environment by 31 March 2016.
• The power station is scheduled for decommissioning between 2024 and 2029, based on a 50-year life span.
