NERSA has granted approval for a total electricity generating capacity of 1200 MW, to be developed in two phases of 600 MW each.
• The project's physical footprint includes a 50-hectare power station area, a 100-hectare coal stock yard providing a 30-day supply of coal, and a 2-hectare raw water dam with a storage capacity of 120,000 m³. The ash dam will cover 500 hectares with a 40-year lifespan and a storage volume of 200 million m³ of ash.
• Water supply for the project involves a raw water supply rate of 750,000 m³/annum for Phase 1 and 1.5 million m³ per annum for Phase 2. Exxaro Resources Limited has agreed to surrender 720,000 m³ of water to secure the source. The infrastructure includes a pipeline from the Matimba Power Station to the on-site Raw Water Storage Reservoir.
• Waste and water treatment infrastructure includes a Waste Water Treatment Works with a daily throughput capacity of 600 m³ and a potable water treatment plant with a daily capacity of 4800 m³. The project will also utilize three Pollution Control Dams (PCDs) with capacities of 75,000 m³, 54,000 m³, and 33,000 m³.
