Voices from the Frontline of Covid-19

This fact sheet describes the 'Voices from the Frontline of Covid-19' project, a collaboration between the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD). The project documented 50 stories from June 2020 to October 2021 to understand how communities in Asia and the Pacific, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean navigated the combined shocks of the pandemic and climate change.

• The project identified that low-income communities and informal settlements were most severely impacted by the pandemic, as they already suffered from weak development infrastructure and services. In response, spontaneous community organizing, particularly led by women and young people, became a critical mechanism for survival and resilience.
• The 'Voices from the Frontline' synthesis report demonstrates that community-led efforts are helping to maintain progress or prevent regression across several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including extreme poverty (SDG1), food security (SDG2), health and wellbeing (SDG3), gender equality (SDG5), water and sanitation (SDG6), decent work (SDG8), climate action (SDG13), and partnerships (SDG17).
• The document provides specific policy recommendations to improve resilience, including working flexibly with local civil society, devolving decision-making to the local level, co-funding micro-finance mechanisms for locally-led projects, and investing in community-level literacy and advocacy skills.
