Survey on Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices Study on the Effects of Climate Change in the Upper Yallahs Watershed

The survey found high levels of climate change awareness in the Grasspiece, Brook Lodge, and Poorman’s Corner communities, with respondents identifying flooding and drought as primary evidence. While most believe they can manage these effects, primarily through evacuation, there is a strong consensus that planting trees and adopting agro-forestry can reduce flooding risks.

• Awareness of climate change is high across the three surveyed communities, with rates of 75% in Grasspiece, 80% in Poorman’s Corner, and 85% in Brook Lodge.

• A majority of respondents believe they can manage the effects of climate change, specifically flooding, with confidence levels of 65% in Poorman’s Corner, 60% in Grasspiece, and 50% in Brook Lodge.
• Evacuation is the primary planned response to flooding, supported by 80% of respondents in Brook Lodge, 77% in Poorman’s Corner, and 67% in Grasspiece.
• Planting trees is widely viewed as a solution to reduce flooding; it is the most popular single suggestion in Grasspiece (70%), while a combination of planting trees, agro-forestry, and avoiding slash-and-burn is preferred in Brook Lodge (65%) and Poorman’s Corner (45%).
