Raising Risk Awareness

This fact sheet describes a framework for building resilience after extreme weather events by combining climate science and social science analysis to inform decision-makers and improve recovery and preparation strategies.

• To determine how to rebuild and prepare for changing risks after an extreme event, a multidisciplinary approach is used. Climate scientists employ robust methods to assess if climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of events, while social scientists analyze the social, economic, and political contexts of exposure and vulnerability.
• The process of improving decision-making involves a communication chain where scientists inform the media about the extent of climate change's influence on an event, which is then disseminated to decision-makers. This information allows stakeholders to make better decisions on response and reconstruction to ensure systems, organisations, and communities are resilient to future climate conditions.
