Perceptions of water access in the context of climate change by rural households in the Seke and Murewa districts, Zimbabwe

This research paper examines the perceptions of 300 rural household heads in Zimbabwe's Seke and Murewa districts regarding water access and climate change, specifically comparing female-headed and male-headed households.

• A 2011 survey of 300 respondents in the Seke and Murewa districts found that most households rely on rainfall for crops, rivers for livestock, and protected wells for domestic use. Water shortages are primarily attributed to reduced rainfall.
• There is a general perception that water availability will decrease in the future, a view more common among female-headed households than male-headed ones. Similarly, female-headed households are more likely to consider emigrating, although few respondents overall expressed this intention.
• Many respondents reported having no means to address water shortages, suggesting a requirement for interventions focused on empowerment and training in sustainable water management.
