Empowering Himalayan communities with solar micro-grids in Ladakh

This case study describes the implementation of decentralized solar micro-grids by GHE in Ladakh and northeast India to provide clean energy to remote communities where national grid extension is unfeasible.

• Since 2013, GHE has installed decentralized solar micro-grids in over 90 villages in Ladakh and 100 villages across northeast India, providing electricity to more than 70,000 people and installing over 1 megawatt of solar power to reduce carbon emissions.
• The solar micro-grid initiative has fostered economic independence for women, who have been trained as entrepreneurs and solar technicians, leading to the opening of over 70 homestays and the revival of traditional pashmina weaving.
• The project has improved educational access for over 17,000 students through 35 Innovation centres that provide digital content, while community-led service hubs ensure infrastructure maintenance and local employment.
