Adaptation to Climate Change in the Hydroelectricity Sector in Nepal

This report describes a study funded by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) and led by the Nepal Development Research Institute (NDRI) to assess the vulnerability of Nepal's hydroelectricity sector to climate change and identify adaptation options.

• The study aims to create an evidence base regarding the vulnerability of the hydroelectricity sector to climate change, identify resilience-enhancing adaptation options, address mainstreaming challenges, and build capacity for the private sector and policy makers.
• Predicting future climate change impacts on Nepal's hydroelectricity sector is difficult because of the country's significant elevation changes and complex hydrology and climate, leading to high uncertainty and discrepancies between climate models and scenarios.
• The research employs an iterative climate risk management methodology consisting of three steps: a Climate Risk Assessment (CRA) for vulnerability, an Adaptation Pathways approach for identifying options, and an Institutional Analysis to address mainstreaming barriers.
• The Climate Risk Assessment (CRA) utilizes a 'bottom up' decision-scaling approach that first evaluates the sensitivity of current hydropower systems and performance to the existing climate before analyzing the potential effects of future climate change.
