Revealing the potential of climate diplomacy to boost poor countries’ interests

This policy brief by Kiran Sura and Nadia Schweimler examines how Least Developed Countries (LDCs) can utilize 'climate diplomacy' to drive more ambitious international climate action both within and outside the UNFCCC framework.

• The authors propose a three-point strategy for LDCs to maximize the potential of climate diplomacy: increasing domestic awareness of how climate action serves the national interest, identifying and leveraging the national interests of foreign governments to encourage climate action, and providing specialized training for diplomatic corps on climate issues while teaching climate experts to communicate in policy-relevant terms.
• The brief argues that LDCs, which are the most vulnerable to climate change, can catalyze collective action by integrating climate messaging into various aspects of their foreign and diplomatic affairs, both inside and outside the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
