ESSENTIAL: Joining forces - how to make local climate partnerships a success

A fact sheet outlining five strategic lessons for local governments to establish successful, long-lasting partnerships for climate compatible development, derived from a CDKN-ICLEI learning programme involving partners in South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

• Successful climate compatible development requires strategic partnership selection that extends beyond the public sphere and environmental sector to incorporate complementary expertise and diverse perspectives.
• Effective partnerships must prioritize the inclusion of marginalized citizens most vulnerable to climate change and seek to convert hostile actors into supporters without compromising long-term goals.
• Local governments should prioritize knowledgeable local actors, map their spheres of influence and accountability, co-design projects to ensure mutual benefit for all partners, and utilize a trusted knowledge broker as a facilitator.
