INSIDE STORY: Climate-smart agriculture - Learning from three agro-ecological regions of Nepal

This case study describes the 'Scaling-up of climate-smart agriculture in Nepal' project, funded by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN). The project aims to increase the resilience of farming communities across different agro-ecosystems by promoting climate-smart agricultural technologies and identifying strategies for scaling these initiatives.

• Nepal's agricultural sector is highly vulnerable to climate variability and extremes, particularly affecting smallholders and women. A significant portion of farmers operate on very small scales, with 26.69% holding less than 0.2 hectares and 47.31% holding less than 0.5 hectares.
• The project identifies several lessons for the successful implementation of climate-smart agriculture, including the use of socially disaggregated vulnerability assessments to understand local contexts and the promotion of technologies that offer multiple benefits within integrated agricultural systems.
• Effective scaling of climate-smart agriculture requires leveraging existing agricultural development institutions and fostering collaboration between diverse stakeholders, including the private sector, non-governmental organisations, and government extension offices. Furthermore, promoting technologies as a package or portfolio is more effective than implementing them in isolation.
