An integrated approach to family farmer adaptation in Brazil’s semi-arid region

This policy brief describes the Adapta Sertão programme, an initiative designed to strengthen the adaptive capacity of small family farmers in Brazil's semi-arid region through community-based adaptation (CBA) and integrated partnerships.

• The Adapta Sertão programme enhances the resilience of small farmers in Brazil's semi-arid region by improving crop yields, facilitating market access for sales, and providing micro-credit for the purchase of productive technology.
• Adaptive capacity in semi-arid regions can be improved by adopting new farming methods and spreading low-cost, efficient technologies, particularly those that enhance the supply and use of water.
• While public policies regarding technical assistance, finance, commercialisation, and technology access are often fragmented, a systemic approach to climate adaptation can be reached by using local actions to establish links and partnerships between these policies.
• The project 'Promoting climate change adaptation policies – a pilot approach from semi-arid northeast Brazil' has tested and monitored 16 different arrangements with small farmers over a two-year period to evaluate food security and adaptive potential.
