Emerging technologies - new opportunities for climate compatible development

This working paper by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) examines how emerging and exponential technologies associated with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) can accelerate the implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement in developing countries.

• The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is characterized by disruptive new technologies and business models that are expected to cause profound economic impacts and affect production and consumption systems over the coming decades, following the Third Industrial Revolution (3IR) which was defined by personal computing, mobile phones, and the Internet.
• Specific emerging 4IR technologies include big data, cloud computing, the Internet of things, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, advanced materials, and other new digital technologies. These are expected to drive change of 'unprecedented speed, scope and scale' coinciding with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.
• The ability of countries to use the 4IR to achieve their NDCs depends on the role of stakeholders, including development planners and policy-makers, in shaping the transition to maximize benefits and minimize risks.
