Re. Neonicotinoid insecticides

• Civil society organizations are calling for the Canadian government to end the use of neonicotinoid insecticides, citing a consensus among over 200 scientists that these chemicals harm beneficial insects and contribute to a massive loss of global biodiversity.
• Neonicotinoids are pervasive in Canada, appearing in surface-water samples and persisting in the environment longer than previously anticipated.
• The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) of Health Canada has proposed phasing out imidacloprid by 2021 at the earliest, while proposing to continue the registration of two other common neonicotinoids as of December 2017, with restrictions that do not address their primary use as seed treatments.
• European Union member countries voted in April 2018 to ban all outdoor agricultural uses of neonicotinoids by the end of 2018 following European Food Safety Authority assessments of risks to bees.
• Scientific evidence suggests neonicotinoids are not necessary for agricultural production; PMRA estimates indicate seed treatments add only 3.2 to 3.6 per cent of national farm gate value for corn and 1.5 to 2.1 per cent for soybean.
