Made-in-Ontario Climate Change Plan

A letter from the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) to the Ontario Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, urging the development of an ambitious climate plan to protect public health and the economy.

These fires required approximately 1,000 firefighters, caused thousands of evacuations in northern communities, and exposed tens of thousands of residents to toxic air pollution.
• The document identifies the primary sources of climate emissions in Ontario as the transportation sector (33%), buildings (22%), and industry (18%).
• CAPE recommends specific actions for the transportation sector to reduce emissions and improve health, including the electrification and expansion of the GO transit system, the development of walking and cycling infrastructure, the expansion of the electric vehicle charging network, and policies to reduce emissions from heavy duty diesel freight vehicles.
• To address emissions from buildings and industry, CAPE suggests updating the Ontario Building Code for energy efficiency and renewable energy, maintaining net metering programs, providing loans or grants for low carbon energy adoption, and funding innovation for a low carbon economy.
• CAPE proposes that an effective provincial climate plan must include a long-term hard emission target aligned with the international goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, as well as benchmark targets, annual progress reports, and reviews every five years.
