Re: Report on Pesticide Toxicity (CPS2017-0510)

A letter from the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) to the Mayor and City Council of Calgary urging the discontinuation of higher-risk pesticides on City land due to health risks, particularly for children.

• In 2016, the City of Calgary used 35 pesticide products, 31 of which are classified in the second-highest risk category according to Alberta Regulations, representing higher exposure risks for the environment and human health.
• Exposure to pesticides is linked to adverse respiratory, neurological, and reproductive health outcomes, with children, newborns, and pregnant women being particularly susceptible.
• Calgary faces a higher risk than other Canadian cities because 18.8 per cent of its population is aged 14 or younger, a demographic that is more vulnerable to pesticide-related health risks during physical development.
• CAPE recommends that the City Council discontinue the use of more toxic pesticides on City land and release the IPM project charter and the associated risk assessment for the IPM Plan revision.
